What is the difference between Bitcoin and altcoins?

Bitcoin is the first and most well-known cryptocurrency, often referred to as “digital gold.” Altcoins, short for “alternative coins,” are any cryptocurrencies other than Bitcoin. Examples include Ethereum, Dogecoin, and Litecoin. While Bitcoin focuses on being a decentralized digital currency, many altcoins offer additional functionalities, such as smart contracts (Ethereum) or faster transaction times (Litecoin). Each altcoin aims to improve or specialize in areas where Bitcoin may have limitations.
